Meet Sophia 👏
11 May 2023
Sophia is 3 years old and was diagnosed with PHPV (persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous) and Microphthalmia in her right eye. These conditions are a result of the eyes not fully developing during pregnancy and prevent the affected eye(s) from functioning properly, resulting in vision loss 😮💨
Sophia's Ophthalmologist explained that due to the differences between her eyes, when Sophia wears a patch she loses 90% of her sight. Consequently, she only patches for an hour a day, but they are hoping to increase this as her curious eye strengthens. She will also be seeing a retinal surgeon in May to help treat her condition.
Sophia's mum, Michelle, said "Considering we don’t really know how much she can see she is doing really well and have big hopes for the future. We do whatever she wants in that hour, [of patching] lots of cuddles and playing. She likes deciding what pattern she wants to wear and is obsessed with the pink unicorn obviously 😍 For me all the beautiful pattern helps too and they are soft on her skin 😊"
Keep up the incredible work Sophia ❤️
